Mary poured expensive perfume over Jesus' feet

We heard today of how Mary poured very expensive perfume over Jesus’ feet and wiped them with her hair and that the fragrance filled the room. It seemed to some that to spend so much money making someone’s feet smell nice was nothing but a pure waste of money, but of course, Mary was symbolically preparing Jesus for his death. The smell of death must have been overpowering in the days when people were crucified en masse, for I am sure that along with the robbers, Jesus was one more among many. By the end of the day, the smell of death must have been very heavy in the air.

I am sure we are all aware of the phrase ‘the smell of death’, and when you read or hear of people passing away en masse, as in rampant disease such as the recent Ebola crisis or mass killings, its not that unusual for the phrase ‘the stench or the smell of death’ to be quoted in news and television reports. Scientists have revealed that around 400 compounds mix together to create a heady mixture of scents soon after death occurs and that the smell of death is a distinctive, sickly-sweet odour that's immediately recognisable and hard to forget. It is understandable therefore that to cover the aroma of death, a secondary and more pleasant perfume would be applied. Jesus of course, knew the path he was treading so he would have known what Mary was doing.
