After a very happy 10.30am Family Service many of us made our way into St Leonard’s Hall to continue our thanks to God and to celebrate with a hot lunch. It was also the perfect time for us to welcome our new Curate Diana into the warmth and comfort of St Mary’s Church Family. Around 48 of us sat down to a truly wonderful lunch, there were 6 tables set up ready for 8 people. The lunch was wonderfully organised thanks to Sue Browning and her small team of helpers, whilst the food had been prepared by some in the congregation, the order of the day was Shepherd’s pie with peas, even us couple of vegetarians had been catered for and it was truly lovely, the food was exceptionally tasty, hot and plentiful, which was followed by apple pie and custard, which was followed by a truly beautiful cake that had been cooked and decorated to celebrate Diana’s Ordination.

While we were all relaxing and gradually recovering from our lovely lunch Diana was called forward by Revd Carolyn and was given a small gift from the church and was then invited to cut the cake. Diana seemed somewhat reluctant to push the knife into such a beautifully decorated cake but as Carolyn said… ‘It was going to be cut up and eaten whatever!’ So, without more ado the cake was cut and the photos were captured. Especially great was to see our Treasurer Alun Powell on his knees… Begging for money??? No, I don’t think so, he was just taking pictures…

Following the cutting and distribution of the cake the raffle was called and some very nice prizes were taken up, one young guy won a huge teddy bear, he looked absolutely delighted with his prize??? Even so, he did take it away with him. Carolyn took the opportunity to thank some of the people who she relies on so much, offering them a small gift, this was Alun Powell her Treasurer who she thanked for all the work he does for the church and to Peter Baker one of our Church Wardens, of whom Carolyn said she didn’t know how she would cope without his help and support. She also called out to Sue Browning and her team who had worked so hard to make our lunch so special, making it all look so effortless, which is always a sign of great organisation – thank you so much.

All in all, it was a brilliant lunch with very tasty, wholesome food, wonderful company and so brilliantly organised. Didn’t I hear someone saying to Sue that it was one of the best church lunches they had ever been too? Yes, I most certainly did. Thank you...
