After the Confirmations...

After the Confirmations...

It was our joy and privilege to witness the confirmation of twelve people in St Mary’s Church this afternoon. It was a truly beautiful day in all aspects. The weather was beautiful, the service was wonderful, and the after-service celebrations were just great.

It was our new Bishop of Bradwell, the Rt Rev Dr John Perumbalath’s first service at St Mary’s and it was a pleasure to welcome him, a visiting priest from Kenya and some of the clergy from our local churches. In his address, the Bishop referred to the Gospel reading from Mark 8: in which Jesus askes his disciples who they think he is… Bishop John, said that there are many thousands of images of Jesus, but we all like to see Jesus according to our own expectations, even to the point of portraying Jesus as a white man with blue eyes, when we all know he wasn’t so… We all want Jesus to be the way we want him to be rather than accepting Jesus as he was. Even the disciples were perplexed as to who Jesus really was. Peter, Bishop John remarked, was really expecting a different kind of Messiah. The Jews were going through a very difficult time in their history and wanted a king who would establish a separate kingdom away from the rule of the Romans, but Jesus wasn’t what they would have liked him to be, thus creating a clash of views. We all pick and choose the way we see Jesus, we so often pray for what we want, but Jesus isn’t there to give us everything we want in fact, he wants and expects things from us, he wants our lives… He wants us to submit ourselves to God and not to want only gains. He said, ‘let your life be your sermon’ and then, focusing on those to be confirmed, Bishop John said that ‘If you devote your life to God you will not change you will remain just ordinary people but you will have an extraordinary life’.

Following the confirmations and the handing out of lit candles to all the candidates we all went out into the beautiful sunshine to take photos. Just wonderful. So, let us remember to keep in our prayers those who were confirmed today they were, Grace, John, Monica, Scot, Mark, Claire, Eve, Niall, David, Kim, Iain and Lynsey. God Bless…
