St Mary's new family service

St Mary's new family service

This afternoon we enjoyed the first of our new monthly family service called ‘Church but not as you know it’ which started at 3.00pm. There was a congregation of around 40 people all families with their children. The children were given colouring to do, face and hand painting to enjoy before tackling a large stack of pumpkins – Revd Julie and Revd Diana took the pumpkins and managed to cut the tops away so that the children could scrape out all the seeds and flesh, then some of the adults helped the children fashion hearts and other shapes making them ready to have a small candle placed inside.

The families then came together to enjoy a song by the puppet crew, ‘I’ve lost my sheep’ an old favourite which received laughs, cheers and lots of applause. The families then watched a few film clips telling us all about light and candles, which everyone seemed to enjoy. The children accompanied by their mums, dads and other family members carefully carried their pumpkins into church and once placed at the foot of the altar the lights were dimmed and the inner pumpkin-candles were lighted and as we all stood or knelt around the altar Revd Carolyn said a short prayer.

Whilst all the people were in church miraculously, afternoon tea appeared on the table with sandwiches and rolls and lots of yummy cakes. Tea, coffee and juices were served and when all were satisfied the service ended with the children taking home their pumpkins. It was all very hectic but a very enjoyable afternoon.
