Preparing the way

Preparing the way

John the Baptist was destined to prepare the way of the Lord, John knew that one greater than he was waiting among us somewhere in the background so, he started baptising those who followed in the way. Advent is a time of preparation and waiting, a time during which we can reflect on our life as we wait for Christmas and the Christ-Child to come once again. As Christian people we are called to reflect on God, and to discern his vision for our lives. We must not despair, we need all our spiritual strength to help us through this time of waiting.

Our second Advent Candle was already flickering to help us understand that the second-purple candle, called the Bethlehem Candle or Candle of Preparation is lit to remind us of God’s promise to send a Saviour who would be born in Bethlehem. Preparation means to ‘get ready’. Help us to be ready to welcome ‘You O God’, as is written in the book of Isaiah the Prophet. ‘A voice calling in the desert, Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight paths for him. Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill will be made low. The crooked roads shall be come straight, the rough smooth. And all mankind will see God’s salvation. Luke 3: 4-6.

Revd Carolyn ended her sermon with a beautiful reflection, pausing between lines to give us all time to think and prepare our hearts for the coming of the Lord.
