Passiontide begins:

Passiontide is a time when we think of God’s love for us. So, what is it to be passionate? Asked Revd Carolyn... well, we can be passionate in our feelings about anything or anyone? We can be passionate about our work, our hobbys, our family, our faith. Saint Paul urges us to not just follow the rules of our faith but to go further and be passionate about it. In our Gospel reading from John 12: we read how Jesus went to the house of Martha and Mary with some of his disciples where Mary pours out her passion for Jesus by using a whole jar of very expensive perfume to anoint his feet and by drying his feet with her hair. Some of Jesus’ disciples complained at the shear extravagance shown through this act, probably finding the whole episode annoying and perhaps rather embarrassing to say the least. But Jesus recognised Mary’s love for him and scolded the fault-finders by saying that although the cost of the perfume may have been useful for the poor, there would always be poor people to care for but that he would not be with them much longer.

During these weeks in the church we hear of God’s passion by the way he offered his son’s life for our sins. We have a life-time to show our passion to Jesus but Mary didn’t! We have time to show our love, devotion and passion in all we do for our church and how often do we act like Mary? You may not realise it; others may not recognise it but God will…
