Good king Wenceslas

Good Morning

Today is traditionally known as Boxing Day, in the Church's calendar it is the day set aside to commemorate St. Stephen, who was the first Christian martyr. Associated with it is the story of Good King Wenceslas which is the hymn I am listing for today.

It tells a story of a bohemian king going on a journey and braving harsh winter weather to give alms to a poor peasont on the Feast of Stephen. During the journey, his page is about to give up the struggle against the cold weather, but is enabled to continue by following the king's footprints, step for step, through the deep snow. The legend is based on the life of the historical Saint Wenceslas 1, Duke of Bohemia or Svatý in Czech (907–935).
