It was with great delight we welcomed the Vesper Singers to St Mary’s Evening Prayer. Their coral singing was as beautiful as ever and it was lovely to be able to sing along with them to some of our favourite hymns.
Revd Carolyn’s sermon was very poignant this evening following the reading from Isaiah telling us that we should be always thankful for what God has given us. Carolyn reminded us that during this time of crisis for thousands of homeless people travelling from war-torn countries that we might consider and be ever thankful for the fullness of our kitchen cupboards compared with thousands who are lucky to get a bottle of water and a hand-out meal – Our bulging wardrobes when there are thousands with just the clothes they stand up in – and our warm and secure beds when those same people are having to sleep on a hard and uncomfortable floor. Mmm – it made us realise how lucky we are…
The Vesper singers ended with that beautiful sung prayer:
God be in my head and in my understanding,
God be in my eyes and in my looking,
God be in my mouth and in my speaking,
God be in my heart and in my thinking,
God be at my end, and at my departing.
