Remembrance Sunday Prayers
Church News | Monday, 9 November 2015 |
Trusting the promises of God, and with faith in his mercy, let us pray to the Lord.
Let us give thanks for the selfless and courageous service and sacrifice of those who brought peace to Europe and the Far East, and for the good example they have given us.
We pray for nations still devastated by war, for their people and their leaders, and for those who suffer the effects or memories of past wars; for veterans, for those who mourn, and for all innocent victims whose lives have been shattered by the cruelty of others.
Let us give thanks for those who work for peace and liberty throughout the world, for Her Majesty’s armed forces, and for all who strive to bring an end to injustice and oppression.
We pray for those in our own day who have grown weary or lost hope as a result of violence or terror; for all refugees and displaced people, and for those who seek to address the causes of discord and distrust.
Let us give thanks for the reconciliation of former enemies, for the flourishing of goodwill between them, and for the many blessings we enjoy as a result of the sacrifices which have made for peace.
We pray for the young people of our own day and for all who will shape the future of our world, that they may be inspired by those who have gone before them to serve as they have been served.
Most holy God and Father, hear our prayers for all who presently strive for peace and all who fight for justice today. Help us, who today remember the cost of war; to work for a better tomorrow; and, as we commend to you lives lost in terror and conflict, bring us all, in the end, to the peace of your presence.
O God of truth and justice, we hold before you those whose memory we cherish, and those whose names we will never know. Help us to lift our eyes above the torment of this broken world, and grant us the grace to pray for those who wish us harm. As we honour the past, may we put our faith in your future; for you are the source of life and hope, now and forever.
Holy Spirit, Breath of God, who does inspire and sustain our destiny, quicken we beseech you, the hearts and minds of all who serve in the Royal Air Force; that those who fly may brave the perils of the air with courage; that those who labour on the ground may be infused with zeal and devotion; and that all who bear the burden and heat of the day may be refreshed with the live-giving power of your grace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Finally, we give thanks for the work of The Royal British Legion and for the Legion’s Patron, Our Sovereign Lady, Queen Elizabeth. For the vision and commitment of the Legion’s founders and benefactors; and for all those who have furthered the cause of The Royal British Legion throughout the past years.
Merciful Father – accept our prayers that we may know your peace in our hearts and your love in our lives, through Jesus Christ our Lord – Amen
