Today we turned our thoughts to the wise men who travelled for many months in difficult conditions just to bring gifts to the Child born to be King… How did they really know a king had been born? What prompted them to set out on such an arduous journey, and why did King Herod request they return to enlighten him of the Child’s whereabouts? Were the gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh presented to the lowly family to help them financially, or were they meant to represent the reason Jesus came to earth, and of his impending life? No less than Gold would have been presented to any great king, while the Frankincense signified his deity, and of course Myrrh was given as a foreshadow of his early and cruel death. Did the holy family realise what these gifts implied? We will never know but it made Mary ponder these things in her heart so, does it make us wonder what can we present to the Holy Child this year? Makes you think, doesn't it?
