Vera and husband Mick with the certificate of thanks...

This Sunday in church we celebrated not only St Leonard, but the kindness that so many people show when we come together to bring our filled shoeboxes for ‘Operation Christmas Child’ a Samaritan Purse run charity that tries to ensure that as many children as possible receive Christmas gifts, children who might not otherwise get anything at this special time.

Today, after all the shoeboxes had been brought forward, laid on the altar steps and blessed on their way, Revd Carolyn came forward to recognise one of our most faithful regulars and to bring to everyone’s attention the work that Vera Willsher does for the shoebox children, not just at shoebox time but all year around. Vera told me that she had been knitting children’s woolly hats for around three year’s now, hats that she kindly donates to the church for Operation Christmas Child. In previous year’s a whole bag of hats had been placed with the shoeboxes, but this year Revd Carolyn insisted that the bag of hats be put at the back of church for a month or so to enable people to choose which ones they wanted to put in their shoeboxes, so much better I think, as we could see and appreciate all the work that Vera had done. This year Vera has knitted around 320 hats yet again! Revd Carolyn thanked Vera for all the dedicated work she does saying that her small acts of kindness throughout the year means that three hundred and twenty children would be kept that much warmer. Carolyn came down to Vera and handed her a certificate of acknowledgement and thanks, something I am sure Vera and Mick will treasure forever. Thank you, Vera for all your random acts of kindness and your small hats of love and warmth too. I noticed that Vera left the church with a bag full of wool ready for her to get knitting again for next year, as Vera is always happy to receive donations of wool.

The certificate read:

‘Vera Willsher’ ‘Many thanks for the hundreds of hats you have knitted for Operation Christmas Child. You have made a difference to so many children’s lives’ ‘Superstar Knitter – Congratulations’

Thank you Vera
