September 2018 Priesting

It was a great privilege to go along to the beautiful church of St Mary & St Lawrence in Great Waltham and to be a witness to the Priesting of Revd Diana Garfield. The Service was conducted by our new Bishop of Bradwell, The Right Reverend Dr John Perumbalath, who also presided at the Eucharist. We were made very welcome by Caroline Brown, Priest-in-Charge of Great Waltham. There were three other Revd’s to be Priested along with Diana.
It was a truly beautiful service lasting the whole of two hours, starting with that joyous hymn ‘Be thou my vision’. The Gospel reading was from John 10: 1-10 in which Jesus tells the Pharisees that He is the Shepherd and how the believing sheep know His voice. Bishop John based his sermon on this reading saying how Jesus portraying Himself as a shepherd is the model on which the Priest is based. And how a Priest is called to lead their people very much like a shepherd leads his sheep, he knows them and loves them, and they know and love him in return.
During the Liturgy of Ordination, the Bishop addressed the Ordinands reminding them to commit to prayer as ‘They cannot bear the weight of their calling on their own strength, but only by the grace and power of God’. The Ordinands knelt as we sang the very moving Veni Creator. Following the Priesting of Diana and the other three Ordinands, they we presented with bibles and had the palms of the hands anointed. Revd Carolyn led The Welcoming, and we all joyously applauded the new Priests.
Following The Peace and The Eucharist, the service ended with that wonderful hymn ‘O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder’. The Bishop lead the new Priests out into the beautiful sunshine so that we could take some amazing photographs of a truly wonderful day… Congratulations!
