They didn’t understand!

In her address this morning, Revd Diana started by saying just how out of touch with reality the disciples were in fact, some of them appeared quite stupid in the way they acted and in the things they said however she added, this is why the Gospel writings are so believable, for should the disciples had been too perfect the stories wouldn’t be so credible. Take James and John, for instance, after all the time they had spent with Jesus, they asked of him a favour. In their stupidity they asked Jesus if they could sit, one on his right-hand and the other on his left hand. Oh my… Jesus must have sighed in disbelief at their request for they had no idea what Jesus’ ministry was all about.
“Are you prepared to do what I have to do” Jesus asked of them, and they said yes! Of course, not realising that Jesus would have to suffer at the hands of those who hated him and give up his life for humanity. No matter how he tried to explain his mission to the disciples they didn’t have a clue. In fact, no one really had a clue for even as Jesus was being nailed to the cross, he cried out to God to “Forgive them for they know not what they do.”
Jesus’ community was quite different to the usual group set-up where people jostle for the top places, as Jesus told them that - he who would be first shall be last and he who is last shall be first in the Kingdom of God. The disciples found it extremely difficult to understand Jesus’ way of thinking, and how he intercedes for us. Just like the disciples, we can become very confused when we don’t know what Jesus is doing in our lives, we don’t always understand that in our brokenness, we can be raised up, we just have to believe and trust in our Lord.
