Teddy Bears Picnic.
Church News | Sunday, 6 July 2014 |
By Jo Bailey
We held the second of our weekend specials on Sunday 6th July. At first the take up seemed really slow, and with many of our regular children away I was worrying that it would just be Olivia and me playing pass the parcel. Nevertheless, Carolyn said "Whatever happens Jo, we aren't going to cancel!" and so I pressed ahead with the planning, put up posters everywhere I could think of, and had it included on two primary school newsletters. On the morning itself the rain did not stop and things looked very bleak indeed. I had a few texts saying "Presumably the picnic is cancelled?" We set everything up inside and prayed someone would come!
Then just before it was due to start, our prayers were answered. The rain stopped and the sun started shining, and children and their parents and grandparents started arriving. And arriving, and arriving. Before we knew it we had 63 people in total, and it was amazing. We started off with a prayer, and read two stories "Going On A Bear Hunt" and "The Tiger That Came For Tea". We played Pass the Parcel, and then went into the Church to make our teddy bear bags, do some scratch art pictures of teddy bears, and some colouring in. Carolyn later chose the best six pictures to win a prize.
By now it was lovely and warm, so we played Musical Chairs in the courtyard, which must have been very amusing for our visitor, Rev. Daniel. We then had our party food, followed by ice creams, and finished off with a game of hit the pinata, and bubbles for everyone. The children loved our special guest Teddy who kept them entertained all afternoon and helped them with the games and activities.
It was a really lovely afternoon, and I have received so many nice comments from parents and grandparents. Everyone wants to know when our next Sunday Special is! Just to let you know, it will be in the Autumn, to celebrate Harvest Festival, more details to follow. Thank you so much to Mark for agreeing to be our bear, and Margaret Deacon, Mum,Sianand the Girls Groupers for all their help. Love Jo x
